Primary Years Program For students age 3-12

AIGT Curriculum Overview

Learning in preschool and primary school is structured through the Program of Inquiry (POI) of the PYP.  Inquiry for integrated subjects are covered through the following six transdisciplinary themes:

  • Who We Are

  • Where we are in Place and Time

  • How We Express Ourselves

  • How the World Works

  • How We Organise Ourselves

  • Sharing The Planet

Each unit is designed to engage students to acquire knowledge by thinking broadly and deeply through inquiry, and real-life experiences.  Furthermore, students demonstrate positive attitudes and principles as they meet the rigorous challenges of not only learning, but planning and carrying out meaningful action as a response of personal awareness and responsibility.

More often than not, subjects are integrated within the unit of inquiry to provide an integrated curriculm across the transdisciplinary themes.

Content subjects at AIGT are organized through the PYP and reflect 6 subject groups:

  • Language (English Langauge Arts and Spanish Language Arts)

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Social Studies

  • Arts (Visual Arts & Music Arts)

  • Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE)

The American Institute of the Gifted and Talented is a candidate school* for the P YP. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School.  IB World Schools share a common philosophy -a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education -that we believe is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: The Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MPY), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes visit http//

Inquiry based learning (IBL) method of instruction at AIGT

Our method of instruction and learning at AIGT stems from the inquiry-based learning method which strives to provide ample and diverse types of learning opportunities for students, guided by their natural curiosity of the world around them.

Teachers are seen as facilitators that encourage learners to ask observe, make meaningful connections, ask questions, and solve problems.  This way, students create their own knowledge through the research process framed by the curriculum content and related issues. At AIGT, students are highly active participants in the learning process as they

take more responsibility for their learning.

Through inquiry-based learning, students:

  • determine the information they need to learn;

  • plan their learning;

  • identify the resources they need to learn based on their individual learning needs;

  • work collaboratively as part of a learning community;

  • assess their progress and learning;

  • learn to document the components of their learning;

  • make connections to their personal lives.
